I've only been gone a short time, but dc seems different to me now. People are moving away. And finding new places to spend their drinking hours. one fellow treated me as though i were a traitor to the city for having decided to give another town a go. i let him go on and on, all the while feeling slightly smug and secure in the knowledge that i am a native.
Today, I felt a strange mixture of so-glad-to-be-leaving and i'll-always-be-a-district-girl as the train wound its way through northeast dc and just beyond the city limits.
thom yorke sang sweetly in my ear and i caught glimpses of other cities' fireworks in the distance.

nothing can trump the DC native in you. just moved in this weekend, and i'm starting to feel real ownership of DC now.
