mon dernier jour ici...

today is my last day at my job. of course there are a handful of people that i will miss seeing on a daily basis, but to be honest, i'm energized at the prospect of having another chance to seek suitable employment. the prospect of seriously pursuing more creative outlets. i'm slowly coming to realize that i don't have to sit at a desk for 60+ hours a week to be considered a success. so, if i can help it, i am not going to do that again.

last night i had my first completely ny-centric girldate with alliebangs. i've dubbed her as such due to her swingy drama-major bangs that i envy and adore at the same time. she called me up late in the day, during that space of 3 or 4 post-lunch hours when my brain ceases to produce anything besides daydreams and sarcastic remarks to my coworkers. we arranged to see a play in the west village, courtesy of some theater critic who was unable to take advantage of his comped tickets.

i showed up at the theater a little early and stood outside, re-reading my most recent literary throwback to my college years... god of small things. as i stood against the cold blue scaffolding across the street from the theater, i recognized a familiar face that took a few moments to register exactly where i knew her from. it was the ultra-feminist, ultra-academic, ultra-awesome mom from almost famous and that heartbreaking movie my mom made watch when i was in middle school after we saw roots together. she was wearing unpretentious jeans and black rubber clogs. what looked like a wedding ring and her hair was long and undone. she looked very actory, gesturing wildly with her hands while speaking in a tight circle with her two academic/actory ladyfriends. they seemed so new york to me, creative and competent but not bothered or interested in the more vapid, vacuous things this city has to offer. new york is full of random sightings.

oh, and last night before i left work at 7ish, i got a call from big mama, excitedly telling me that my little sis had written a poem for a school contest, the topic being "your favorite place". of course, knowing how awesome and adorable my sister is, i couldn't turn down an impromptu reading. i became increasingly engaged as my mom read each rhyming line with surprisingly lyrical meter and at the end, i exclaimed the last line with an overexcited yelp that caused a few of my coworkers to turn in my direction. i praised ari for her literary prowess and asked that she email me a copy post haste! behold, the glory that is my ten year old sister:

hi lala!
heres my peom again!

My favorite place in the whole world,

has grassy fields of green.

There are old castles to explore,

and the land is always clean.

Its surrounded by an ocean,

in which i love to swim.

the dolphins are swimming by my side,

i hold on to its fin.
Riding horses, and karate,
are definitly my style.

Lets go down to the basketball court,
and play there for a while.

This place is filled with dragon worship,
and plenty of education,

Can you guess what this place is?

ITS MY IMAGINATION!!!!!

ari is so cute sometimes it makes my heart hurt.

That poem is way rad! I mean, what 10 yr old comes up with "This place is filled with dragon worship"?! too cute.

No way you saw Frances MacDormand! I adore her! She was incredible in "The Piano". Total hottie, in a weird sorta way.

your sister is SO rad. i think i vastly prefer poetry of children under 13.

oh god, me too abi!

simple rhymes. unpretentious motifs. unabashed earnestness which is only truly acceptable in the hearts of the very young and the eccentric.
